Rockhampton is situated on the banks of the Fitzroy River, just north of the Tropic of Capricorn in Queensland, Australia. Aborigines are from Darumbal the region, but European settlement began when brothers Charles and William Archer arrived in 1854 in search of pasture.

Colonial architecture is evident through the city with structures dating from pioneer times.

With an average of over three hundred days of sunshine per year, Rockhampton is a destination popular tourist destination for those who love the outdoors. Mount Archer National Park provides a wide variety of plants and native animals. Frazier Park is the summit with breathtaking views across the city.

The Cliff Kershaw Gardens opened in 1988 and stands as the place where the detritus of garden once stood. Garden highlights include a waterfall built in imitation of the side road which is dramatically lit at night. The lush vegetation throughout is from central Queensland.

Olsens Capricorn Caves are just outside the northern boundaries and is recognized as the attraction oldest tourist in Queensland. The spectacular limestone caves were discovered in 1882 by a Norwegian immigrant named John Olsen and open for tours public in 1884.

A visit to Rockhampton Heritage Village takes you back in time as you experience the daily life of villagers who have lived between 1850 and 1950. Timber cutting and forging demos give a taste of old crafts that were so essential to daily life. There's even a chance to attend classes at the village school.

Dreamtime Cultural Centre is located on an old site of the tribe originally occupied by Aborigines and features traditional tribal Darambal ring ceremony. The center's main building, a large waterfall and flora natives occupy space on the banks of the creek from the north. The complex is located Torres Strait Islander south of the main building with its giant dugong and huts indigenous to the region. A guided tour explains the ancient beliefs and ways of life experienced by Aboriginal people. Other leisure activities and lessons boomerang didgeridoo performances and demonstrations of traditional dance. Replica ceremonial sites, rock art, burial sites and gunyahs former can be found at the traditional Aboriginal site. Guided tours available include a display of sandstone recess caves and a tour of native plants.

Known as the gateway to the Capricorn Coast, the historic city of Rockhampton offers a relaxing subtropical climate.
